You know the basics. You understand the tiles, the card and the Charleston. But once you sit down to actually play, the questions start coming.
Which hand should I choose? What should I pass? Should I pivot? Was that a safe discard?
That’s exactly why Club Mahj Royale created The Learners Lab.
Learners Lab is not Mahjong 104. It’s the bridge between completing beginner instruction and becoming a more confident, independent player.
Each bi-weekly session begins with 20–30 minutes of focused coaching, feedback and Q&A, along with tangible learning resources. Then we’ll move into approximately 90 minutes of guided play, where you can immediately apply what you’ve learned in a comfortable environment where questions are encouraged.
The four-session journey
LAB 01 — Crack the Card
Learn to read the NMJL card more strategically, recognize flexible hands and identify your strongest starting options.
LAB 02 — The Charleston Code
Explore what to pass, what to protect, how to preserve flexibility and what your incoming tiles may be telling you.
LAB 03 — Pivot With Purpose
Learn to recognize when a hand has stalled and confidently identify your next-best option instead of forcing a hand that isn’t working.
LAB 04 — Play the Table
Put it all together through exposures, discards, defensive play, table awareness, NMJL nuances and increasingly independent decision-making.
Track your progress
Throughout the league, players will use Troop Mahjong Merit Books + stickers to celebrate skills, milestones and those wonderful “Ohhh…NOW I get it!” moments along the way.
Because at Learners Lab, learning counts just as much as winning.

You do not need to feel fast.
You do not need to know every rule or nuance.
And you definitely do not need to stop asking questions.
You simply need to be ready for more time at the table.
